Who doesn't LOVE Chocolate? Okay, maybe there are some weirdos out there. However, if you crave it non-stop, there might be a reason. Dr. Susan Yanovski is a co-director at the government's Office of Obesity Research and she says you might not be getting enough of one specific mineral in your diet. Chocolate has a lot of MAGNESIUM in it. Some experts think your body might crave chocolate when you're not getting enough of it from other foods.
Up to 80% of Americans don't get enough magnesium in their diet. When you have chronically low levels, it ups your risk for high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, and osteoporosis. It even weakens your immune system. Unfortunately, eating tons and tons of chocolate ISN'T the best way to get more magnesium into your body. A little bit of dark chocolate is okay, but it's loaded with calories. It's better to get that extra magnesium in other ways.
Some healthier foods that are packed with it include fish, nuts, seeds, beans, avocados, brown rice, and dark leafy greens like spinach.
