Newsom Proposes A Way To Help Pay For Abortion Services For Women In Need

As Roe v. Wade is in danger of being overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court, Gov. Gavin Newsom is preparing to protect women's rights with a new spending proposal where California taxpayers would help pay for abortions for women who can't afford them.

Today Newsom announced that he wants the state to give $40 million worth of grants to clinics to help offset costs of abortions for women who have no way of covering the costs. In California, an abortion can range from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars depending on how far the pregnancy is and whether the person's insurance covers the cost.

"California will not stand idly by as extremists roll back our basic constitutional rights; we're going to fight like hell, making sure that all women - not just those in California - know that this state continues to recognize and protect their fundamental rights," said Newsom.

California has been moving swiftly to help protect women's rights with Democrats in the state Legislature proposing 13 bills to make abortions easier in the state. For more information visit ABC 7.
