Ed Asner, who starred on The Mary Tyler Moore Show and whose voice was featured in the hit film Up, has died at the age of 91, passing away peacefully on Sunday morning. No cause of death was given.
His manager, Perry Zimel, said in a statement, "He was a brilliant actor. Amazing activist, a true friend, and great man."
During Asner's prolific career, he was nominated for 17 Emmys, winning seven. He also won five of his 11 Golden Globe nominations.
After working the assembly line at General Motors and serving in the Army, the Missouri born Asner dabbled in comedy groups like Second City before going on to get a role on Broadway opposite Jack Lemmon in 1960's Face of a Hero. At about that time, he started appearing in smaller roles on television. In 1962, he made his film debut in an uncredited role in the Elvis Presely flick Kid Galahad.
Asner went on to make a name for himself in 1970 by portraying the grumpy "Lou Grant" on The Mary Tyler Moore Show. He continued the role in the spin-off series Lou Grant from 1977 to 1980.
Meanwhile, he voiced characters in the Spider-Man cartoon, Captain Planet, various Star Wars shows and of course, in the Disney/Pixar film Up.
He was last seen in 2018 on the Netflix series Dead To Me.
He leaves behind his four children as well as grandchildren.
