Michelle Obama Talks Learning To Put Her Health First After Having Kids

If there is a super mom out there, it's possible that it's Michelle Obama.

Not only was she the First Lady for 8 years, but she also was raising two teen daughters while the Obama family was in the White House, and I have to give she (and Barack!) credit for the added challenges that must have come with such public adolescent years for their daughters, Sasha and Malia.

Now, though, Michelle is proving her super mom status by speaking out about why it's so important for women to look after their own health - especially after they become mothers - because no one else is going to for them.

While speaking at the Essence Festival in New Orleans over the weekend, Michelle opened up about why looking after yourself is so important.

“We [as women] have to own our health. It’s one of these things that no one can take from you."

Why is it more important for women and mothers? Well, it's not, it's just that we aren't as good about making sure we are taking care of ourselves as men often are.

Michelle pointed out that, "when it comes to our health as women, we are so busy giving and doing for others that we almost feel guilty to take that time out for ourselves."

She also went on to talk about how when she and Barack's daughters were young, Barack would still manage to go to the gym, and when she asked how he was making it to the gym, he simply told her "I make time."

She then got incredibly candid: “This was right when we started going to counseling, y’all, so this was one of our issues, you know? But I found myself getting mad at him because he was doing what he needed to do for him. And I think for us as women, many of us, we have a hard time putting ourselves on our own priority list, let alone at the top of it."

It's soooo true! Once the kids arrive, it's a lot easier to feel like you don't have the time to do things that are solely beneficial for you, but if you really think about it, you HAVE to look out for yourself, or you will end up being no longer able to look out for your family.

So take the time to eat a little healthier, go to the gym, or just spend time working on your mental wellness. It WILL be worth it!
