Costco Is Selling Avocados That Last Longer

There's nothing worse than knowing you have an avocado at home and being so excited to eat it when you get home from work, only to find that it's totally way too mushy now and there's no chance.

OK, there actually are worse things... but this one is still pretty dissapointing.

But now, Costco is on the verge of selling a new type of avocado that is supposed to last longer than your average favorite fruit!

Yep, Buzzfeed reported that Costco has worked on avocados coated with an additive that is said to double the shelf life of the fruit. Basically this additive makes the fruit itself ripen more slowly than your regular grocery store avo.

Buuuut is it safe?

The additive is made by Apeel Sciences (which is backed by Bill Gates), and is all-natural. It is a powder of different plant-based fats mixed with water, and once it has coated the fruit, it stops them from oxidizing and losing water so quickly. In turn, this causes the avocados to last longer and reduce food waste! And is "generally recognized as safe" by the FDA. So you don't have to feel bad about eating it.

Costco will be selling these coated avocados for just $5 for a bag of 5, which is pretty on pace with what you get an avocado for at the regular grocery store anyway - and the chances are you might end up throwing those out after they've ripened too quickly.

Apeel says these avocados are meant to last two to three times longer than your average avo, so buy a couple bags and get ready to make all your meals way better with delish avocado.

Of course, if you're someone who is looking for a perfectly ripe avocado at the grocery store because you need to use it TONIGHT, I don't think getting one of these new and improved fruits will be your best bet.
