L.A. Councilman Resolves Parking Ticket Relief Bill for the Homeless

Yesterday, Los Angeles City Councilman Marqueece Harris-Dawsom introduced a resolution for the state Assembly bill that requires cities to create a parking ticket relief program for homeless people.

The bill was first introduced in January by Assemblyman Isaac Bryan and if it is signed into law, it would require agencies to offer qualified people payment plans for unpaid parking citations as well as forgiving at least $1,500 in parking fees annually for those experiencing homelessness. Harris-Dawsom has noted in his motion that in 2020 about 10,300 people lived in their vehicles in Los Angeles.

"For many of these homeless residents, their vehicle serves as their safe haven, protecting them from exposure to wind, rain, heat and cold, and it keeps them and their possessions safe," the resolution states. The bill hopes to help those who are experiencing homelessness by relieving them from parking fines that could make them lose their vehicle. For more information visit ABC 7.
