Wildfire In McDowell County Contained

(McDowell County, NC) -- A McDowell County wildfire is no longer a threat. Flames burned through roughly 90-acres off Highway 80 in Marion between Thursday and Sunday. The U.S. Forest Service says the fire was 100-percent contained by early evening yesterday. The cause is still being investigated.

Buncombe County Looking For Open Space Bond Feedback

(Buncombe County, NC) -- Buncombe County is still welcoming feedback on how to improve open space in the future. Voters approved 30-million-dollars in bonds last fall which will be used for conservation and greenway expansion. The county's recreation staff has presented potential plans and a funding breakdown during public meetings this month. Residents can still give feedback online through the end of the month.

Italian-Based Distribution Company Opens In Hendersonville

(Hendersonville, NC) -- An Italian-based distribution company is opening in Hendersonville. Andreani has moved into its first U.S. branch, which is a facility that covers roughly ten-thousand-feet. Around 15-employees are expected to be employed there by the end of the year. The company specializes in providing motorbike suspension components.

Asheville Council Approves Plan For I-26 Connector

Asheville Musicians Invited To Carnegie Hall

(Asheville, NC) -- Some Asheville musicians are heading to Carnegie Hall next year. WLOS-TV reports the Asheville High School Band and the School-of-Inquiry-and-Life-Sciences-at-Asheville wind symphony have been invited to play the historic venue in New York next March. It's part of The National Band and Orchestra Festival. Fundraisers will be held to help students pay for the trip, which is expected to cost 18-hundred-dollars each.

CMPD Investigates Double Homicide

(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD is investigating a double homicide. Two people were reportedly shot to death along The Plaza in northeast Charlotte last night. There's no word on any arrests. Officers say a man was also killed in a stabbing at an apartment complex on Kingsford Drive yesterday.

East Charlotte Fire Considered Suspicious

(Charlotte, NC) -- Investigators are looking into a suspicious east Charlotte fire. Units responded to a home on Mansell Court, where a home caught fire Saturday morning. It took around ten-minutes to control the blaze, but not before it caused around 25-thousand-dollars in damage. Firefighters say they do believe the fire was set on purpose.

NC Lawmakers Pass Learner's Permit Bill

(Raleigh, NC) -- North Carolina lawmakers are trying to reduce the time to hold a learner's permit. Current law requires teens to drive on a learner's permit for a year before they're allowed to obtain a regular license. A proposal to cut that time back to nine-months just passed the North Carolina Senate almost unanimously.

Lincolnton Woman Arrested After Deadly Wreck

(Lincoln County, NC) -- A Lincolnton woman is facing serious charges in a deadly wreck. A four-year-old was killed and two other young children were hurt in a two-vehicle accident on Startown Road north of Lincolnton on Friday afternoon. The state patrol says the woman who was driving the children was arrested for felony death by vehicle, DWI, possession of meth and more.

Lows are in the mid-20s this morning, with a warm up to just 53 later. There's already a freeze watch in place for tonight.

Body Found In Burning Pit Outside Cary Home

(Cary, NC) -- An investigations is underway into the discovery of human remains inside a burning pit in Cary. It happened early Sunday morning outside a home on Dorsett Drive. Firefighters responded to a call of trash burning and arrived to discover a badly burned body inside a homemade fire pit. Fire crews later found a man inside an RV on the property suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was rushed to a nearby hospital and treated for life-threatening injuries. Authorities have not been able to determine the age, race or gender of the person found in the burning pit.

Virginia Man Killed In Weekend Hit And Run; Fayetteville Woman Charged

(Fayetteville, NC) -- A Fayetteville woman is in the Cumberland County Jail in connection with a fatal hit and run incident over the weekend. Police say around 5:20 am, 48-year old Mark Sweatt was attempting to cross the street at Skibo Road, when he was struck by a Honda Civic that kept going. Sweat was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities used surveillance camera footage and license plate reader to find 39-year old Amber Voight hiding at a nearby Walmart parking lot. She was arrested and charged with felony hit and run.

Cary Resident Sentenced To More Than Three Years In January 6, 2021 Riot On U.S. Capitol

(Cary, NC) -- A Cary man has been sentenced to three years and four months in prison for his part in the January 6th, 2021 riot on the U.S. Capitol. Prosecutors accused 20-year old Aiden Bilyard of spraying a chemical irritant toward Capitol police officers and later using a baseball bat to smash out a window inside the federal building. Records also show Bilyard later joined the U.S. Airforce. Last year, he pleaded guilty to an assault charge. To date, there have been 27-North Carolina residents who have been charged in connection with the attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Cooper Allows Riot Bill To Become Law Without His Signature

(Raleigh, NC) -- A bill that would impose harsher penalties on those convicted of riot related crimes in North Carolina, became law on Friday without the governor's signature. Governor Roy Cooper had 10-days to sign or veto the bill, after it was approved by both the House and Senate two weeks ago. But Cooper acknowledged the veto-proof Republican majority, along with the support of some Democrats, as reasons for him allowing House Bill 40 to become law uncontested. Cooper successfully vetoed a similar bill in 2021.

New Comprehensive Cancer Center To Open In Moore County Next Week

(Moore County, NC) -- Starting next week, a new comprehensive cancer center will open in Moore County. The 68-million dollar outpatient facility is part of FirstHealth of the Carolina's in Pinehurst. The 120-thousand-square feet four story building, will bring together all of the hospital's treatment and support services in a single location. It will also offer palliative care services, support for caregivers, research and clinical trials and a dedicated wellness center. Hours of operation will be 8-5 Monday through Friday.

Duke Loses Heartbreaker To Tennessee In Second Round Of NCAA Tournament

(Orlando, FL) -- The Duke Blue Devils lost to Tennessee 65-52 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in Orlando over the weekend. The Vols smothering defense with four seniors, proved to be too much four Duke's four starting freshmen, who trailed for entire second half. Coach Jon Scheyer said the team seemed disjointed in the seven point loss. Duke finished the season with an overall record of 27-9. Meanwhile, the Duke women had an easier time with an 89-49 win over Iona. They'll take on Colorado in the second round tonight at Cameron Indoor Stadium. And the NC State women will be matched up against Ohio State this afternoon in second round competition in Columbus.

Police Investigate Shooting In Hanes Mall Parking Lot

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- Winston-Salem police are investigating a shooting that happened in the parking lot near the old Sears store at Hanes Mall. A witness told police it happened Saturday around 7:45 p.m. between a man and some teens who were in a burgundy van. The van left the area southbound on Stratford Road. Five unoccupied cars and a cargo trailer were hit by the gun shots but no injuries were reported.

Forsythe County Sheriff's Office to Host Another Community Forum

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- You'll soon have a chance to ask questions in person of Forsyth County Sheriff Bobby Kimbrough Junior. The sheriff and his full command staff are hosting another community forum in April at a Kernersville Library. Sheriff Kimbrough says the forums are one of the most important things he does in his position as a leader of Forsyth County. The next one happens April 5th from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Paddison Memorial Branch Library in Kernersville.

Developer "Believes in Greensboro"

(Greensboro, NC) -- Officials with the Ryan Companies say they "believe in Greensboro" and will continue to develop more acreage in the Pyramid Village commercial district. The next parcel of land will be about 30 acres along Highway 29 in Northeast Greensboro. Plans for the area involve healthcare facilities, retail and housing for families. Ryan Companies says the development will be anchored by Walmart and Lowes stores.

Pay for Guilford County Summer Parks Jobs Starts at $15

(Greensboro, NC) -- The Guilford County Parks Department is looking for summer staff. Officials say they'll be hosting several events in the next few weeks to fill temporary summer positions such as attendants, cashiers, event hosts, lifeguards and pool managers. Starting pay is 15-dollars an hour. In-person and virtual hiring events will take place Tuesday, March 21st and Saturday, March 25th. DMV Will Soon Take Morning Appointments

(Raleigh, NC) -- North Carolina's Division of Motor Vehicles offices will soon take appointments only in the mornings so that they'll be able to help more walk-in customers in the afternoons. The appointments will begin May 1st. DMV officials also say they're working to update their website and policies in order to allow residents to complete tasks online ahead of time. The agency additionally will soon show estimated office wait times online.
