Groundbreaking Soon For Tower At Asheville Airport

(Asheville, NC) -- Work is beginning soon on a new air traffic control tower at Asheville Regional Airport. Crews are expected to break ground for the construction next month, which will replace a tower that's already more than 60-years-old. The project is part of a larger airport expansion that should be done in 2026.

Shooting Hoaxes Investigated in North Carolina

(Transylvania County, NC) -- Shooting hoaxes at North Carolina schools are being investigated. Lockdowns were placed in Transylvania, Cherokee and Henderson county schools yesterday after threats were called in. Other districts in North Carolina received threats that turned out to be hoaxes as well. It's been a growing trend across the country this week.

Suspect Charged In Cherokee Overdose Death

(Cherokee, NC) -- A suspect is facing charges in an overdose death by Cherokee Indian Police. A member of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians was arrested for death by distribution earlier this week. The victim died in January of this year.

Gas Pipeline Planned For BRP

(Asheville, NC) -- A natural gas pipeline is going under the Blue Ridge Parkway. The National Park Service says approval for the Buncombe County project has been approve. Neither the parkway nor the trail will be closed since the construction will be done without trenches.

Bears Found Mutilated In Woodfin

(Woodfin, NC) -- North Carolina's Wildlife Resource Commission is looking into the mutilation of three bears in Woodfin. One resident told WLOS-TV that three bears were dumped in the entrance to a neighborhood off Moore Street last weekend. The carcasses had allegedly been dismembered. A five-thousand-dollar reward is being offered in the investigation.

Harrah's Cherokee Center Taking Coat Donations

(Asheville, NC) -- Harrah's Cherokee Center Asheville is hosting a winter coat drive. A special bin is set up at the center so people can donate. It marks the second year the center has teamed up with the organization Grateful Bread in the event. Donations are being accepted through December 22nd.

Juvenile Arrested For Bus Stop Shooting

(Charlotte, NC) -- A juvenile is accused of shooting a student near a CMS bus stop. A 17-year-old from Rocky River High School was injured after exiting the bus on Lanza Drive in east Charlotte Wednesday afternoon. The CMPD arrested the suspect for first-degree attempted murder. The suspect was last listed in critical, yet stable condition.

York County Investigating Panthers' HQ Deal

(York County, SC) -- The York County sheriff's office is investigating the use of public money by Carolina Panthers' owner David Tepper. Millions of dollars were initially rewarded to build a new team headquarters and training facility in York County. The deal ended up failing. The sheriff's office is looking to see whether any laws were broken.

(Charlotte, NC) -- Multiple hoax threats in Charlotte schools are being investigated. Calls came in about gunshot victims came in for four CMS high schools yesterday. It's a trend that has been growing across multiple states this week. None of the threats have turned out to be serious.

One Dead In Charlotte Garbage Truck Crash

(Charlotte, NC) -- A garbage truck driver in Charlotte is being charged in a deadly wreck. A man was killed in a head-on collision with a garbage truck at Providence and Fairview roads early Wednesday morning. The driver was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle.

Charlotte Hosting ACC Championship

(Charlotte, NC) -- College football fans are gathering in the Queen City this weekend. Bank of America Stadium will host the ACC championship game between North Carolina and Clemson. UNC hasn't won a conference championship in the ACC since 1980. Clemson is looking for its eighth.

Test Train In Place In Charlotte

(Charlotte, NC) -- A test train is in place for Charlotte's Gateway Station. It comes as new tracks and a passenger platform were completed in Uptown, so Amtrak passengers have access to multiple transit opportunities. The train will be used to test clearances for the new boarding platform. The city of Charlotte will be responsible for construction of a multi-use building or railroad operations.

Hornets Host Washington Tonight

Threats Made Against More Than A Dozen Schools Across North Carolina Were All A Hoax

(Raleigh, NC) -- Law enforcement agencies responded to more than a dozen active shooter calls at schools across North Carolina Thursday. It turns out all of them were fake. Investigators say the so-called 'Swatter 911 calls' prompted man schools to be placed on lockdown while SWAT teams combed the campuses. The FBI warned parents and students that 'Hoax Threats' are crimes that could result in state, local and federal charges being filed.

New Evaluation System For State Teachers Approved By The North Carolina Board Of Education

(Raleigh, NC) -- The North Carolina Board of Education Thursday, voted to approve the next step in implementing a new system of evaluating teachers. One that is based on classroom performance instead of years of experience. The new system could also boost teacher salaries as high as 56-thousand dollars a year. The teacher licensing system must still be approved by the North Carolina General Assembly.

State Association Approves 10-Percent Pay Raises For North Carolina High School Referees And Officials

This, after the state high school athletic association voted to approve a 10-percent pay increase staring on January 1st, 2023. Rocky Mount Couple Found Shot To Death Inside A Car, Could Have Been A Murder-Suicide

(Rocky Mount, NC) -- Investigators in Rocky Mount are trying to determine if the discovery of two people shot to death inside a car Thursday morning, was the result of a murder-suicide. The victims, found in the parking lot of Barnhill Construction on Construction Drive, were identified as 24-year old Destiny Wiggins and 28-year old Devone Brown. Two small children who were also inside the vehicle, were not harmed.

New Post Election Survey Finds Governor Roy Cooper Maintaining A High Approval Rating

(Raleigh, NC) -- Results from a new High Point University survey shows Governor Roy Cooper continues to have a high approval rating. The poll, taken after the November general election, showed 48-percent of the respondents approve of the job Cooper is doing, while 28-percent disapproved. The survey also attributed the Governor's high approval rating to a large number of support from state Republicans.

Canes Score A Flurry Of Second Period Goals To Beat The Blues 6-4

(St. Louis, MO) -- The Carolina Hurricanes continued its three game winning streak last night, with a 6-4 victory over the St. Louis Blues. Even more impressive was how they overcame a 2-0 deficit by scoring three goals in just 64-seconds late in the second period to go ahead 3-2. Those goals were made by Brent Burns, Jordan Martinook and Seth Jarvis. Martinook also scored the winning goal, sealing deal 6-4. Carolina will take on the L.A. Kings Saturday night in Los Angeles.

House Shooting Critically Wounds W-S Woman

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- A Winston-Salem woman has been taken to the hospital in critical condition after a bullet was fired into her house. Police say it happened Wednesday night in the 500 block of West Sprague Street. The shots were fired from a car that was driving through the area. The victim's name hasn't been released but police say they're trying to determine if she was the intended victim.

High Point Company Wants Former UFI Workers for their Open Positions

(High Point, NC) -- A High Point diesel and electric bus manufacturer says the company may be able to help former employees from United Furniture Industries. Thomas Built Buses is currently looking to hire 165 employees. The company's leaders say their assembly worker and maintenance positions may be a good fit for many of the former UFI workers, who were abruptly laid off by text and e-mail right before Thanksgiving. The jobs at Thomas Built Buses start at 17-dollars an hour and include benefits.

Second Harvest Food Bank Moves into New Home

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- The Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina has now moved into a new, bigger home. Leaders with the non-profit say the 140-thousand-square-foot warehouse and work space will enable the group to serve more than 50-thousand meals each week. The new facility also now provides room for job training and a career cooking program. It's located at 3033 Shorefair Drive in Winston-Salem.

Hunters Donate 60K Pounds Of Venison For Needy Families

(Raleigh, NC) - State hunters are continuing a strong tradition of donating venison to families in need. Officials with the North Carolina Wildlife Federation Commission say nearly 60-thousand pounds of deer meat was donated through the Deer Donation Program last year, with at least the same amount expected for this season. Hunters give the venison to deer processors, who then pass it along to food banks and food pantries. Leaders say the program, in collaboration with North Carolina Hunters for the Hungry, also works to make sure the deer population is controlled and sustained.

Gas Prices Down After Holiday Weekend

(Greensboro, NC) -- North Carolina gas prices are showing a slight decrease after the holiday weekend. Triple-A puts the statewide average for a gallon of regular at three dollars-and-20 cents. That's an eight-cent decrease from this time last week and an almost 20-cent drop from last month. The national average is down to three-47.
