(Asheville, NC) -- Snowfall totals in Asheville are already nearing yearly norms. A National Weather Service meteorologist told the Citizen-Times that the ten-point-four-inches of snow last weekend was just under the normal yearly amount of eleven-point-one inches. More snow is possible this weekend. Roads are still in danger of being icy as temperatures drop into the 20s this morning.

Former Buncombe Deputy Back On Job

(Asheville, NC) -- A Buncombe County chief deputy once accused of stealing a gun is back on the job. Don Eberhart was found not guilty in a gun theft case dating back to April 2020. Sheriff Quentin Miller said yesterday Eberhart is once again working for his office, this time as captain for court security. He'll oversee the duties of more than 20 deputies.

Lawmakers To Decide On Primary Election Dates

(Raleigh, NC) -- State lawmakers will discuss the possibility of moving back primary elections again today. The News & Observer reports Senate Republicans are calling a vote since there are current legal battles over the newly-redrawn maps. The elections were already previously delayed from March to May. The GOP is trying to make sure there's time to redraw the maps again if the new districts get tossed.

Asheville, Buncombe Making Plans For Pack Square Plaza

(Asheville, NC) -- The city of Asheville and Buncombe County are working together to find a vision for Pack Square Plaza. The governments are seeking guidance on how to move forward with the area following the removal of the Vance Monument. The only thing left in the plaza is the base of the monument. Proposals are being taken until February 11th.

Asheville Emergency Shelter Extends Operations

(Asheville, NC) -- An Asheville shelter is planning to extend operations. WLOS-TV reports the Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministry will keep its emergency shelter open 24-hours-a-day for the rest of the month. The shelter is already over capacity due to cold conditions. The Salvation Army will remain open on Cold Purple nights.

School Districts Still Affected By Weather

(Asheville, NC) -- Many school districts in western North Carolina remain closed today due to icy conditions. Asheville City, Buncombe County and Haywood County are all operating on a remote learning day. Cherokee, Clay and Swain counties are pushing back the start of the day by two-hours. Most other districts remain closed.

Driver At-Large After Deadly Hit-And-Run In Concord

(Concord, NC) -- A lookout is underway for the suspect in a deadly hit-and-run suspect in Concord. Investigators say the victim was hit by a car while walking on Union Street South yesterday. The driver never stopped. Surveillance footage showed a silver sedan.

Guns Found At CLT On Rise

(Charlotte, NC) -- More guns are being found at Charlotte Douglas International Airport than ever before. The TSA reports over 100 guns were found in carry-on bags last year, which is three-times the number found in 2020. More than 250 guns were discovered at airports across North Carolina last year.

Man Accused Of Killing Mother In Concord

(Concord, NC) -- A man is accused of killing his mother in Concord. Investigators say a woman was shot to death inside a home on Brookstone Drive early Tuesday morning. Officers caught her son as he was trying to leave the scene. He's now in Cabarrus County jail without bond on a charge of murder.

Money Available For Juvenile Crime Prevention

(Mecklenburg County, NC) -- Mecklenburg County organizations have a chance to use newly-available funds to help in youth crime prevention. Two-million-dollars is now being offered through the county's Juvenile Crime Prevention Council. WSOC-TV reports organizations can apply for funding through early February.

House And Senate Vote Would Postpone Primary Elections Until June

(Raleigh, NC) -- Lawmakers in the North Carolina General Assembly are expected to vote on a bill today that would push the date to hold primary elections back to June 7th. State Republicans say the extra time may be needed in order to redraw Congressional and legislative district lines, if the state Supreme Court rules the current maps are unconstitutional. An appeal of a lower court ruling that upheld the new maps is scheduled to go before High Court on February 2nd.

Triangle Area Expecting Second Wintry Mix Of Snow And Ice On Friday

(Raleigh, NC) -- The latest forecast models are predicting central North Carolina will get another round of freezing precipitation on Friday. That could include a wintry mix of ice and snow accumulation on roadways. A blast of cold arctic air is expected to move into the Triangle area late Thursday and collide with a low pressure system containing a lot moisture, creating the conditions for snow. Temperatures during day on Friday are expected to remain in the 20's. Accumulations could be between one-and-three inches.

City Of Durham Votes To Give Police And Firefighters A Pay Raise

(Durham, NC) -- The Durham City Council voted Tuesday night to approve a resolution that would give police and firefighters a pay raise. However, the bulk of the increase will be for new recruits. Effective immediately, starting salaries for police recruits will go up by 10-percent to 42-thousand-593 dollars a year. Firefighters will get a 14-percent increase in pay to boost their annual salaries to 40-thousand-682 dollars. The move is an attempt to fill over 200-vacancies within the Durham police and fire departments. The raises will show up on their next pay checks on January 28th.

78-Year Old Pilot Walks Away From Harnett County Plane Crash With Only Minor Injuries

(Harnett County, NC) -- Federal investigators will return to a wooded area of Harnett County today to try and determine the cause of a small plane crash. It happened Tuesday afternoon near the intersection of Highway 55 and Maude Stewart Road north of Angier. A preliminary report says the pilot was trying to land at Fuquay/Angier Airfield when apparently flew into a flock of birds and crashed. The 78-year old man was not seriously injured.

One Person Killed In Car Crash In Durham Tuesday

(Durham, NC) -- Authorities in Durham are investigating a tragic car crash that killed one person and injured several others on Tuesday. It happened around 4:30 pm between the U.S. 70 split and East Club Boulevard. Police provided few other details about the accident, only that it involved two vehicles and tied up traffic for several hours. Investigators did not release the identity of the victim or the conditions of the other people involved in the crash.
