Winter Storm Izzy Brings Big Snow to WNC

Winter Storm Izzy settled into Western North Carolina shortly after midnight Sunday night, bringing with her gusting winds and heavy snow.

Totals vary depending on what side of town you take the measurement.

Parts of West Asheville have seen up to 6 inches of snow, while downtown Asheville is not too far behind with about 5 inches on the ground.

There are several roads that are closed or at least severely delayed because of the weather.

  • The whole parkway is currently closed due to ice and snow.
  • US-176 Both Directions in Henderson County, Near East Flat Rock Near US-25 - The road is impassable near US-25, due to snow and icy patches.
  • US-64 Both Directions in Transylvania County, In Brevard Near NC-280 - The road is closed at NC 280 due to snow and icy patches. Motorists are advised to use extreme caution in the area.
  • US-276 Both Directions in Transylvania County, In Brevard Near NC-280 - The road is closed at NC 280 due to snow and icy patches. Motorists are advised to use extreme caution in the area.
  • I-26 (Andrew Jackson Highway) WB in Henderson County at Mile Marker 56, Near East Flat Rock Near Ozone Drive - The road is closed 3 miles West of Exit 59, Ozone Drive.

Duke Energy's outage map is showing roughly 15,000 customers are without power as of 1:00pm Sunday.

Forecasters expect the snow and sleet to continue into the early hours of Monday morning.

NCDOT continues to run plows and salt trucks chipping away at the snow still effecting the interstates.
