Hendersonville Woman Arrested For Murder

(Hendersonville, NC) -- A suspect is in Henderson County jail for the alleged murder of her boyfriend. Hendersonville police found the man shot to death inside a home on State Street Sunday morning. Twenty-seven-year-old Natalie Miller was arrested for first-degree murder. She's expected to appear in court this morning.

Opioid Overdoses Up In Buncombe

(Buncombe County, NC) -- Opioid overdoses are on the rise in Buncombe County. WLOS-TV is reporting emergency rooms in the county treated 76 patients for overdoses between July and September. Numbers for North Carolina as a whole are down. Buncombe County Commission chair Brownie Newman says a new medication assisted treatment program at the detention center will help lay a foundation for recovery.

Santa Rappels Down Chimney Rock

(Chimney Rock, NC) -- Santa is making his way down the biggest chimney around in western North Carolina. Saint Nick rappelled down Chimney Rock on Saturday as families waited at the bottom to take photos. The public is invited again this Saturday while Santa makes the descent three more times. The only cost to attend is the regular park admission price.

Cherokee Woman Dies In Wreck

(Cherokee, NC) -- Park rangers are investigating a deadly wreck near Cherokee. WLOS-TV says a 23-year-old Cherokee woman lost control of her car on Newfound Gap Road early Sunday morning. She died after the car slammed into a tree. There's no word if there were any other passengers.

Porch Pirates Strike Arden

(Arden, NC) -- Porch pirates are striking some homes in Arden. Several thefts were reported from homeowners on Saturday morning. One resident told WLOS-TV she witnessed the suspect switch out a small box for a large one he stole off a front porch. She believed it was used as a decoy. Around one in three Americans have had a package stolen before.

App State Heading To New Orleans Bowl

(Boone, NC) -- Appalachian State is heading to the New Orleans Bowl. The Mountaineers capped off another Sun Belt championship with a 45-to-38 win over Louisiana Saturday. The team will take on UAB on December 21st. First-year head coach Eliah Drinkwitz is reportedly taking the lead job at Missouri, but it's unclear if he'll be around for the bowl game.

Teens Steal Car With Seven-Year-Old Inside

(Charlotte, NC) -- Five teens are accused of stealing a car with a seven-year-old boy inside in northeast Charlotte. The child's mother says the group held a gun to her son's head while she ran inside a laundromat on North Tryon Street yesterday morning. They drove off, but returned to the laundromat to let the boy go before leaving again. Officers caught three of the suspects after they ditched the car on Shamrock Road.

Charlotte Lawyer Finished In Top Ten Of Miss Universe

(Atlanta, GA) -- Charlotte lawyer Cheslie Kryst is a top ten finalist in the 2019 Miss Universe Pageant. The competition was held last night at Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta. Kryst, the reigning Miss USA, was one of 90 women taking part. The Miss Universe title went to Zozibini Tunzi of South Africa.

Juveniles Charged In Middler Schooler's Death

(Charlotte, NC) -- Two juveniles are facing involuntary manslaughter charges in the death of a Charlotte eleven-year-old. Romello Cox died after he was hit by a car on Rama Road near McClintock Middle School Thursday night. Investigators say the eleven- and 12-year-old arrested were trying to fight Romello before he was hit. The family lit candles at the scene of the accident Saturday night.

Lancaster Deputies Investigate Murder-Suicide

(Lancaster County, SC) -- An apparent murder-suicide is being investigated in Lancaster County. Deputies say a man shot his ex-girlfriend to death before turning the gun on himself Saturday night. It happened outside a home on Bob White Road in the Rich Hill area.

Man Seriously Injured In Apartment Shooting

(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD is looking for the suspect in a Saturday night shooting. Officers say a man was shot multiple times at an apartment complex on Baltimore Avenue near the South End neighborhood. A resident called 911 after the man showed up outside the person's door. He was being treated for life-threatening injuries.

Kentucky, Virginia Tech Playing In Belk Bowl

(Charlotte, NC) -- Kentucky and Virginia Tech are going bowling in Charlotte. The teams will face-off in the Belk Bowl at Bank of America Stadium on New Year's Eve. This is the last year Belk will sponsor the game. The Charlotte 49ers accepted a bid last week to play in the Bahamas Bowl against Buffalo on December 20th. It will be the 49ers first bowl game.

Two Dead In Weekend Shootings

(Raleigh, NC) -- Two deaths were reported as part of several violent incidents in Raleigh overnight Sunday. A man died after being found shot in the parking lot of Club 30 Plus on Rush Street; two other men who had been at the same club reportedly suffered non-life-threatening stabbing injuries. Police say another man died in an apartment shooting near NC State. Two other non-deadly shootings were reported in the city, one around that same time and then a fourth on Sunday night.

Poet, Former NC State Professor Killed In Crash

(Raleigh, NC) -- An acclaimed poet and retired NC State professor has died in a pedestrian-versus-motor vehicle crash. Police say Gerald Barrax of Raleigh was hit in a crosswalk near the Walnut Creek Softball Complex on Saturday night. The driver, identified as Jamal Jones, is charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian and misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, according to Raleigh police.

Police Fail To Apprehend Indecent Exposure Suspect

(Raleigh, NC) -- Authorities were looking for a suspect who exposed himself on an Amtrak train in North Carolina yesterday. Raleigh police say it happened in Rocky Mount on the Charlotte-bound Carolinian train, according to a report from WNCN-TV. Raleigh police reportedly went to Union Station at around 5:15 p.m. to meet up with the suspect, but by the time they arrived, passengers were already exiting the train and the individual could not be found. The case has been referred to the North Carolina Transit Authority.

Knightdale Army Veteran Wins Cash 5 Prize

(Knightdale, NC) -- The North Carolina Education Lottery is sharing a story of a winner from Knightdale. Army veteran William Porter the Third says he won a Cash 5 jackpot prize of about 268-thousand dollars after he stopped at a Poor Boy General Store and Grill last week while helping a friend who had just gotten out of the hospital run an errand. Porter says while he was waiting, he decided to get the Cash 5 ticket. He says he used his own numbers: each of them, Porter says, was an age he was when something significant in his life happened.

Tar Heels Playing In Military Bowl

(Undated) -- The North Carolina Tar Heels football team is going bowling. UNC will make its first bowl appearance since 2016 when it plays Temple in the Military Bowl. The game is being played in Annapolis, Maryland on December 27th.

Ambulance Stolen In Guilford Co., Hits Patrol Car

(Greensboro, NC) -- A man is facing over a dozen charges after, Greensboro police say, he stole an ambulance and hit a patrol car. It all started Saturday evening at Cone Health Wesley Long Hospital. Police say Daniel Williams stole an ambulance, and when officers tried to recover hit, he hit their patrol car. They say Williams led state troopers on a chase before he was eventually caught and arrested. On officer suffered minor injuries. No one else was hurt.

Pedestrian Killed In Davidson Co. Hit & Run

(Davidson Co., NC) -- A man is dead after a hit-and-run crash in Davidson County. It happened early Sunday morning on NC-109 North, near Sheetz on Gumtree Road. Officials say Timothy Dickens of High Point was killed. They have not identified the suspect but say he was driving a Chevy heavy duty pickup truck. Anyone with information is urged to called Davison County Sheriff's Office.

Eight People Homeless After Apt. Fire In Burlington

(Burlington, NC) -- Eight people are homeless after an apartment complex fire in Burlington. The blaze broke out Saturday morning at The Colony Apartments on South Mebane Street and Audrey Avenue. Four units were badly damaged. The residents are being helped out by the Red Cross. There's no word yet on what caused the fire.

Meadows Calls Out Fellow GOP For Trump Remarks

(Washington, DC) -- North Carolina Congressman Mark Meadows is calling out two of his fellow Republicans for remarks against President Trump. Appearing on CNN's State of the Union, Meadows said a pair of his colleagues, who took issue with Trump's phone call with the Ukrainian president, were wrong to suggest there was anything improper in the conversation. Texas Representative Mac Thornberry and Ohio Representative Mike Turner called the phone call at the center of the impeachment inquiry "inappropriate" and "alarming."

NC Officials Encourage Winter Preparedness

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- As Winter Preparedness Week wraps up in North Carolina, state officials are urging folks to plan now. There are between six and 12 winter storms in the Piedmont Triad each year, according to Winston-Salem officials. Residents should make sure they're prepared by keeping three days of non-perishable food on hand, keeping fresh batteries stocked and dressing warm. Folks are also asked to make sure their pets are a part of their emergency plan.
