(Spruce Pine, NC) -- Heavy downpours are leaving some residents in Spruce Pine trapped. This after rising waters flooded the bridge leading to their homes over the weekend. Residents tell "ABC 13" the only way for them to get out is to walk about a-mile-and-half through the woods to their cars. They say their biggest concern is first responders being able to access the area in the event of an emergency.

Town Of Lake Lure Warns Of Possible Evacuations

(Lake Lure, NC) -- Residents near the Broad River and area streams should be on high alert due to heavy rainfall and rising waters. The Town of Lake Lure opened floodgates yesterday of the Lake Lure dam. The town says folks should be ready to evacuate to higher ground if needed.

Body Of Asheville Man Recovered From Tennessee Lake

(Jefferson Co., TN) -- Officials in Jefferson County, Tennessee are identifying a drowning victim as a man from Asheville. The body of 50-year-old Daryl Smart was recovered from Douglas Lake Saturday morning. The search for Smart began the day before after he went underwater in Nina Creek and didn't resurface. Officials say a woman who was swimming with him was able to make it back to their boat.

Man Accused Of Abusing Toddler In Transylvania Co.

(Transylvania Co., NC) -- Transylvania County sheriff's officials are looking for a man who's accused of abusing a toddler. Deputies say Charles Booker was last seen driving a red Nissan Sentra with NC license plate TPN-3868. They were called to a home in Pisgah Forest on Friday about a two-year-old who'd been abused. The child was taken to a local hospital to be evaluated.

Man Charged With Peeping In Black Mountain

(Black Mountain, NC) -- Black Mountain police are announcing the arrest of a Peeping Tom. Police say 71-year-old Bob Orr used an electronic device to peep into a room for sexual purposes. He's charged with six felony counts of secret peeping. Police say Orr surrendered following an investigation that began in late May.

Flood Warning In Effect For Mountain Island Lake Area

(Mountain Island, NC) -- Heavy rain is causing issues across North Carolina. Downpours are causing flash flooding, river flooding and travel disruptions. The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Warning for northeastern Gaston County and northwestern Mecklenburg County through 1:45 p.m. today. The rising water levels are threatening Mountain Island Lake communities. The lake is expected crest at 106 feet.

State Of Emergencies Declared For Catawba, Caldwell Counties

(Undated) -- Officials in Catawba and Caldwell counties are declaring a State of Emergency following several days of heavy rain and more on the way. They say the rainfall has led to "numerous water rescues, severe flooding, infrastructure damage, hazardous travel conditions, and the potential for widespread power outages." The City of Hickory also declared of State of Emergency due to significant damage to streets, bridges and other public infrastructure. The severe weather started on Friday and is expected to last through Thursday.

Schools Closed, Delayed Due To Weather

(Catawba Co., NC) -- Catawba County Schools are closed today due to the bad weather. The district cites standing water inside some buildings and multiple road closures. Newton-Conover Schools are on a two-hour delay. In Hickory, all of the public parks are shut down in the wake of flooding.

(Lincoln Co, NC) -- Three people are dead after a possible weather-related crash in Lincoln County. It happened late Saturday night at Highway 27 and St. Dorothy Lane. Troopers say a car ran off the road and overturned in a creek. They say the weather may have contributed to the crash due to heavy rainfall at the time.

Woman Killed After Accidentally Shooting Herself At Ruby Tuesday's

(Kannapolis, NC) -- A woman is dead after accidentally shooting herself at Ruby Tuesday's in Kannapolis. The incident happened Saturday night at the restaurant on Wonder Drive. Police say the 28-year-old woman suffered a gunshot wound to her stomach. She was rushed to a local hospital where she died of her injuries. An investigation is ongoing, but police believe she owned the gun.

Rolesville High Teen Rescues Woman From Flood-Swept Car

(Wake Forest, NC) -- A Franklinton woman says she's alive because a teenager who was on his way to the movies saved her life. Rushing water swept Dajah [[ DAY-jah ]] Gladden's car into a flooded ditch along Ligon Mill Road on Saturday. Gladden told ABC11 someone quickly opened the passenger-side door, pulled her out, and got her to dry ground. That someone was 18-year-old Anthony Matula [[ ma-TOO-la ]] who will graduate from Rolesville High School on Friday.

Flooding Washes Out At Least 12 Roads

(Wake County, NC) -- At least a dozen roads are washed out in Wake and Franklin counties. NC-DOT reports five sections of NC-96 are closed because of flooding or flood damage in Wake County east of Rolesville. NC-96 is closed in both directions near Zebulon. U.S. 401 is closed near NC-98 in Franklin County and a number of streets and intersections are closed in Wake Forest and Durham

Flooding Damages Buildings On Duke Campus

(Durham, NC) -- Floodwaters are closing some buildings on the Duke University campus. CBS17 reports the Bryan Center is closed after rushing water knocked a glass wall out of place and damaged another wall inside the building. Workers at the Duke Divinity University School report water inside the school and the chapel.

Health Officials Warn Of Snakebite Season

(Raleigh, NC) -- Health care officials are warning that the approach of summer is the start of snakebite season. North Carolina leads the nation in snakebites and officials at WakeMed say Wake County leads the state. Emergency Room staff at WakeMed treat about 100 people for snakebites every year. They say it's important to keep landscaping trimmed around your house and don't allow wood or trash piles to build up because snakes like to hide in those places.

Four People Killed In Nash Co. Plane Crash

(Nash Co., NC) -- Four people are dead after a plane crash in Nash County. It happened Friday in the Aventon area. Officials say the small plane was traveling from Florida to Maryland when it crash-landed in someone's yard. All four victims were from Naples, Florida and ranged in age from 48 to 53. The NTSB is looking into the cause of the wreck.

Man Wanted In Winston-Salem Gas Station Robbery

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- No one is hurt after an armed robbery in Winston-Salem. It happened late Friday night at the Citgo Gas Station on Old Lexington Road. Police say a young black man walked into the store and demanded cash at gunpoint. He was wearing a grey hoodie and black sweatpants. Anyone with information is urged to call Winston-Salem PD.

House Catches Fire In Reidsville

(Reidsville, NC) -- An investigation is underway in Reidsville after a house fire. It broke out Saturday afternoon at a home on Magnolia Drive. Rockingham County officials believe the fire started in the bedroom. They say everyone made it out safely. There's no word yet on the extent of the damage.
